The Amarillo Museum of Art offers volunteers a broad range of options designed to exceed the needs of our diverse audience. When you donate your time to the AMoA you are giving something invaluable to a successful community, the gift of art. Our Volunteers ensure that the children, adults, and senior citizens of our community receive the highest quality Art Programming in the tri-state area. AMoA Volunteers have the ability to choose the type of work that best suits their talents. When you decide to help the Museum give the gift of art, you can choose from these primary areas of need:
School Tours: As a docent in the School Tours Program, you will first receive extensive training in art history, art making, materials and processes, and the language of art. Following this training you will learn how to lead guided tours of children from 4 years old through high school. School Tour Docents meet several times per year to discuss current exhibitions, the Museum’s Permanent Collection, and share advice and tips for successful tour guidance.
Art for Healing: The AMoA’s Art for Healing Program use the therapeutic value of art making to help enhance the lives of people with mental and physical disabilities. Our current Volunteer needs for this program involve providing art therapy to residents of nursing facilities who are suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. As an Art for Healing Docent you will receive training in care giving, art activity guidance, safety, and proper high level care nursing home etiquette. Docents will meet regularly to provide art projects in house to the V.A. Hospital, the Cottages at Quail Creek, Plum Creek Specialty Hospital, and other locations as they are added. The AMoA will also offer multiple sessions to discuss project methods, information gathering, and mental well being.
Traveling Docent: The AMoA’s Outreach Programming uses Volunteers to take art to the schools and nursing homes that can’t visit the Museum due to financial or physical reasons. As a Traveling Docent you will help fill a large gap in Arts Education in our region. Traveling Docents will receive training in art history, art making, materials and processes, the language of art, classroom presentation styles, technology, and curriculum integration. By taking our resources to the people who need us most, the AMoA and its Volunteers ensure that all people receive the wonderful gift of art.
